Natural Healing for Vertigo

Hey Beautiful,

I’m honoured that you’ve landed here, that you’re looking for some great natural help, and that you’re really willing to jump in and do your part to help heal your vertigo.

First off, I’m writing this article for people who have vertigo but have ALREADY been checked out for serious causes of it by their Doctor and any specialists they were referred to.

I do believe fully that you can heal vertigo with diet, supplements, lifestyle and mindset shifts, but it is vital that you have ruled out any major causes of vertigo (otherwise your plan for healing would involve healing that root cause, not directly working on vertigo).

If you need some natural help with your vertigo, I see clients over the phone or through Skype from anywhere in the world as a Certified and Registered Holistic Nutritionist.

If you’d like to learn more about programs with me, you can get in touch with me here.

First off, why does vertigo happen?

There are lots of theories and causes of vertigo, some are serious (which is why it’s so important that if you have vertigo, you’ve already had tests run by your Doctor).

In this article, I’ll be focusing on a few different methods of healing vertigo:

  1. increasing blood flow to and from the brain and ears, so wastes are excreted, fresh nutrients are brought in, and balance is restored
  2. nourishing the nervous system, which is getting some pretty mixed up signals from the ears and brain, and improving it’s conductivity, so that messages from your eyes can move to your body faster and leave you with less vertigo
  3. if I were working with you one-on-one, I’d also look at adrenal (stress gland) balance as well as thyroid health through your symptoms, since imbalances in either can cause dizziness, head rushes and trigger vertigo
  4. mindset or metaphysical reasons for vertigo
  5. overall brain health (some people experience vertigo after concussions, if that’s the case, the earlier you can get brain-healing nutrients into the brain, the better for healing!), and
  6. homeopathics for vertigo

Vertigo Healing: Increase Brain Blood Flow

Increasing blood to and from the brain can help with vertigo by bringing in fresh nutrients (essential to proper brain, inner ear and eye function), and bringing back out wastes. In this way, balance can be restored.

It’s important to make sure that you’re getting enough nutrients first, and then jump to the herbs. Using herbs without a basis of great nutrition and getting everything nutrient-wise that you need, is only a temporary or lower-acting fix.

Here are some herbs and nutrients that increase blood flow to the brain:

  • Magnesium (women aged 19-30 need 310 mg Magnesium per day, women 30+ need 320 mg per day, pregnant women need 350-360 mg per day, breastfeeding women need 310-320 mg per day, and men 19+ need 400-420 mg magnesium per day)
  • B-Vitamins (these are a complex of vitamins and they work best together. Some of them are known to open arteries and little blood vessels to bring fresh nutrients to the brain)
  • Ginger (A small study showed that 1 gram of ginger root reduced symptoms of vertigo better than placebo)
  • Gingko Biloba (start with SMALL, LIGHT doses, and slowly, gradually build up just so you don’t shock your brain! One study showed Gingko biloba to be as effective at treating vertigo as betahistamine, a commonly prescribed drug for vertigo. Gingko in this study helped 79% of patients treated with it, and had less side effects in those patients than those receiving the drug. Study doses of Gingko biloba was 240 mg per day)
  • Cayenne and other hot peppers (300 mg twice daily can reduce symptoms by increasing circulation – dashes of the spice into your cooking can be helpful)
  • Turmeric (500 mg twice per day can help stimulate circulation and reduce inflammation – dashes of turmeric in your cooking can be helpful)

Vertigo Healing: Nourish The Nervous System

Your nervous system is getting a lot of mixed messages when you get vertigo!

The goal here is to improve the speed at which messages from your brain come through to your body; that way you’ll receive the messages faster that everything’s okay again and you may be able to shorten vertigo attacks based on this.

Nutrients that nourish the nervous system:

  • Vitamin D
  • Essential fats (like those in flax oil and hempseed oil)
  • DHA (cleanest source is from algae oil, after that from a HIGH quality, small fish oil like anchovy oil or oil from another small fish. If you’re buying a cheap, run of the mill fish oil from a regular pharmacy, I’d rather see you not take any at all. The lower down the food chain you go, the less contamination, heavy metals, and pollutant concerns there are, so always opting for algae oil, or oil from small fish only is incredibly important.

Vertigo Healing: What’s Your Mind Trying To Tell You?

Sometimes I love working with clients on metaphysical reasons for their healing. I understand not everyone is into this, and I skip past it with many. But those who jump into it with excitement heal on a very deep level.

Louise Hay says that the emotional reason for vertigo is a history of flighty, scattered thinking, or a refusal to look at what’s present and in front of you right now in life.

Michael J Lincoln says that the emotional reason for vertigo is being overcome with scattered thoughts based on new information or outside opinions of your new situation. Feeling overwhelmed, unsafe and feeling like old helpful habits are no longer working also pop up in his book Messages From The Body under vertigo.

Finding ways to bring focus into your life may be of great help to you. Learning to meditate; spending quiet time focusing on one thought or a mantra you love could be really helpful to you.

Asking for help, and learning to accept what’s in front of you right now in life can also be really helpful approaches. My favourite, amazing, enlightening book for this is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. It is such a magically calming read.

Just open up to yourself, if these feel right, a little scary, or make you tear up, then maybe it’s something to think about and work on.

In the beautiful words of Louise Hay for healing vertigo, repeat to yourself often, “I am deeply centered and peaceful in life. It is safe for me to be alive and joyous.” (Gosh, isn’t she amazing?!) This excerpt was pulled from Heal Your Body.

Vertigo Healing: Healing Concussions and Post-Concussion Syndrome

This one is very near and dear to my heart. There are many nutrients that heal the brain, and so many are important to be taking in on a daily basis, at higher-than-normal doses to allow your body the nutrient excesses it needs to heal.

  • Essential fats (from flaxseed oil and hempseed oil)
  • DHA (from an algae-based oil like Nutri Vege)
  • Citrocholine (needed for the the brain to be responsive to neurotransmitters)
  • Carnitine (an amino acid that helps your cells produce energy, more energy from your brain cells means more energy for healing your brain)
  • Bacopa Monnieri (improves focus, relieves anxiety, improves the rate of learning and learning retention)

And so many more nutrients play essential roles to the brain. If you need help, the faster you get in to see someone really well-versed in brain health and healing, the better when you’re post-concussion.

Vertigo Healing: Homeopathics for Vertigo

Fully, honestly, I don’t work with homeopathics a lot. But, I will recommend them when they have amazing studies backing up their success.

I personally have had profound effects from the right homeopathic at the right time (and I was really disbelieving of them for quite a while, until one worked *shockingly* well for me).

A double-blind, randomized study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine found that a homeopathic that contained Cocculus (called VertigoHeel or Cocculus Compositum) was as effective as a common conventional drug in the treatment of vertigo. It was as able as betahistamine to reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of vertigo. (This information was from a review of that study in the book I linked to. Often times journal studies are protected so I can’t link to that specific one for you).

Vertigo Healing: A Few Last Words

There are a couple of last things I’d keep in mind to heal vertigo naturally.

If you know you’re not being very good at these, and you’re suffering with vertigo, these would be additional recommendations I’d make to help you heal:

  1. Balance your blood sugar levels
  2. Cut out caffeine
  3. Cut out alcohol
  4. Cut out smoking
  5. Limit your sodium intake to 2,000 mg per day, and switch from table salt to a natural, more mineral-rich salt like Celtic, Himalayan or grey sea salt.
  6. Avoid processed food, which is packed with table salt quality and way too much salt
  7. Avoid eating at restaurants that overdo sodium, and drink LOTS of water alongside your meal if you end up at one
  8. Drink lots of water each day to help flush out your bloodstream and inner ear. I talk about ideal amounts and how to get them in over here
  9. Make sure you’re getting enough calcium (not from dairy, which is full of phosphorus, too, which means you lose minerals like calcium processing it – from foods like sesame seeds, kale and other dark green veggies) – the part of the inner ears that help you balance rely on calcium carbonate to touch the tiny hair-like cells that line the inner ear for balance. If you’re not getting good quality calcium, or not enough of it (which is super-common, look at the rate of osteoporosis in the countries that drink the most milk as one of the sole ways to get calcium 😉 ) other particles may be drawn into the inner ear that have a similar charge to calcium, and they could cause some real issues balance- and vertigo-wise.)
  10. Come see me for natural help.

Sending love to you!
